Artist Statement
“I have a passion for making images. When I’m not capturing images, in the darkroom printing, or at the computer enhancing and printing images, I’m thinking about capturing or enhancing images. I’m always evaluating the time of day, the light, or the best composition for an image. When I’m in the darkroom working on an image I’m thinking about how the image would work in a digital environment, when at the computer I think about capturing images on film or digitally, and when I’m capturing images I think about the various ways can I enhance the image - it’s a continuous circle. I can’t even go to the grocery without looking for, evaluating, or composing images.
I keep a log of locations to visit or revisit at various times of day (usually late afternoon or early morning), under various light and weather conditions and at each season of the year. There is beauty everywhere just waiting for the artist to draw it out much as a great violinist pulls all the sounds possible from their instrument.
Having been a photographic artist since the early 1970’s, I have studied with John Sexton, an assistant to Ansel Adams and an Ansel Adams Workshop instructor; however, most of my formal photographic education has been and still is self-directed.
Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, John Sexton, and most recently many of the artists we represent at the gallery (www.photography414.com) are artists who have influenced my artistic vision.
I began my professional life as a musician and music educator. After a few years of teaching I became a school principal. Soon after becoming a principal I began making images on weekends and evening, during school vacations, and on frequent backpack trips to the Rocky Mountains of New Mexico and Colorado. Soon it became my passion to capture images and make them into art. My passion for art was so overwhelming that I left the teaching profession in 1991 and began chasing light.
I have images in several private and corporate collections throughout the southwest. Images from commercial assignments are included in several portfolios and advertising publications of architects and designers.
